Certificate in Career Pathing (online)
Program Overview
The Certificate in Career Pathing (CCP) program trains career development officers or those who wish to pursue careers in Aboriginal employment development work or other related fields. The program's eight online learning modules offer a range of techniques and theoretical approaches that complement the work performed within First Nations and non-First Nations employment agencies and career centres. CCP learners participate in knowledge and skill building activities that assist with job requirements for career counsellors, education counsellors, social development workers, program coordinators, managers, administrators, administrative assistants, and others.

(click item to view course description)The Career Development module provides learners with theoretical concepts and skill building activities in effectively assisting clients to access career opportunities. Components of this module include an overview of career development approaches, theoretical and developmental approaches to career development, developing tools and techniques to work with client needs, utilising agency and community networks, and managing client services. Learners use techniques and resources for assisting clients with developing targeted, realistic career plans. The knowledge and skills are introduced within the context of First Nations career pathing and the delivery of community services.

The Communication Skills module provides learners with theoretical concepts and skill building activities in effectively building rapport, using verbal and non-verbal communication, providing and receiving feedback, managing conflict, and responding to confrontation. Learners develop a variety of communication and conflict resolution techniques for working collaboratively with clients, coworkers and community members. The knowledge and skills are introduced within the context of First Nations career pathing and the delivery of community services.

The Employee Relations module provides learners with theoretical concepts and skill building activities in effectively dealing with clients and community organizations. Components include interpersonal communication and emotional intelligence techniques. The Labour and Market Demand module provides learners with theoretical concepts and skill building activities in effectively researching, examining, and developing policies that impact on labour force development. This module presents an overview of current policies and agencies that impact on employment training and development initiatives, types and sources of policies, and the process of policy development and change. Key Canadian legislation and policies are discussed, including the Aboriginal Human Resources Development Strategy, Labour Market Agreements, Employment Insurance Act, and other associated developments. Learners examine legislation, policies and agencies that relate to employment issues and develop a policy targeted at improving a real work situation. The Management Skills module provides learners with theoretical concepts and skill building activities in effectively managing day-to-day activities within a dynamic workplace. Components of this module include an overview of management, human resource planning, organisational skills, developing a supportive team environment, stress management, using the computer as a management tool, and financial management practices. Learners apply techniques for managing financial and human resources, developing a positive team environment, and using the computer as a management tool. The knowledge and skills are introduced within the context of First Nations career pathing and the delivery of community services.

The Problem Solving module provides learners with theoretical concepts and skill building activities in effectively facilitating client-centred problem solving, developing targeted action plans, using strategies to avoid rescuing, applying problem solving strategies, responding appropriately to disclosure, and addressing worker issues. Learners increase their ability to generate creative, proactive solutions for client counselling and workplace situations. The knowledge and skills are introduced within the context of First Nations career pathing and the delivery of community services.

The Public Education module provides learners with theoretical concepts and skill building activities in effectively planning a public relations strategy, identifying target groups, conducting public relations, using a variety of public education methods, developing audio-visual materials, and delivering presentations. Learners plan, develop, deliver, and evaluate a presentation on a work-relevant topic for the target group of their choice. The knowledge and skills are introduced within the context of First Nations career pathing and the delivery of community services.

The Workforce Mentorship module provides learners with theoretical concepts and skill building activities to effectively motivating and assist clients and communities. Components of this module include assessing employment skills, understanding knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA) and their impact on employment; mentoring, resume writing and interviewing techniques. The knowledge and skills are introduced within the context of First Nations career development and the delivery of community services.
