First Nations Orientation to Day Care
Program Overview
This program is designed to provide the minimum level of training and skill development required for entry-level work as a child care worker in First Nations child care centres. The training outcomes of the program are comparable with related provincial training programs in order to facilitate employment of First Nation child care workers within both First Nation and provincial jurisdictions.
Entrance Requirements
Saskatchewan Grade 12 or Adult 12 and a clear criminal record check and a vulnerable record check. Mature applicants who lack regular admission requirements can be admitted under the SIIT Mature Admission Policy. Upon completion of the orientation program, students must meet the entrance requirements for admission into the advanced program.

(click item to view course description)An introduction to the development of young children. Students learn to plan age appropriate activities for infants, toddlers and preschoolers, and to obtain information to assist care providers caring for children with exceptionalities.

A course in effective communication skills for use within a childcare context. Students learn different ways to communicate to guide behaviour.

In this course students are introduced to the essentials of planning and operating a child care program. Students look at ways to manage, operate and evaluate childcare programs, and plan physical environments for childcare programs.

In this course, students are introduced to health promoting child care practices. Teaching methodologies for a health/safety/nutrition curriculum for young children are also introduced.

In this course students are introduced to curriculum planning. Students are prepared to make informed curriculum decisions in child care settings.
