First Nations Orientation to Headstart

Program Overview

This program is designed to provide the minimum level of training and skill development required for entry-level work as a child care worker in First Nations Headstart programs.

Entrance Requirements

Saskatchewan Grade 12 or Adult 12 and a clear criminal record check and a vulnerable record check. Mature applicants who lack regular admission requirements can be admitted under the SIIT Mature Admission Policy. Upon completion of the orientation program, students must meet the entrance requirements for admission into the advanced program.

  • Caring for Exceptional Children
    OEXC 119

    An introduction to the importance of accepting individual differences in children and creating individually appropriate environments. The emphasis is on providing caregivers with methods of working of working with children with FASD.

  • Caring for Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers (Headstart course)
    OITP 115

    An introduction to the development of young children. Students learn to plan age appropriate activities for infants, toddlers and preschoolers, and to obtain information to assist care providers caring for children with exceptionalities.

  • Communication for Caregivers
    OCOM 114

    A course in effective communication skills for use within a childcare context. Students learn different ways to communicate to guide behaviour.

  • Health, Safety and Nutrition
    OHSN 118

    In this course, students are introduced to health promoting child care practices. Teaching methodologies for a health/safety/nutrition curriculum for young children are also introduced.

  • Introduction to Head Start (Headstart course)
    OINT 120

    This course introduces students to the foundation, principles, and values that are the basis for all Aboriginal Head Start On Reserve programs. It also prepares students to participate in the delivery and management of programs that reflect the philosophy and follow the guidelines and accountability requirements of Aboriginal Headstart On- Reserve.
