Heavy Equipment Operation
Program Overview
This introductory program provides training in the operation of heavy equipment, routine maintenance of machinery and practical field operations of excavating, land clearing, grading and road building as well as safe operating techniques specific to each machine. The SIIT Heavy Equipment Operation (HEO) program concentrates on hands-on skill development with approximately 80% of the program spent in the field and on the machines, and 20% in the classroom.
Courses
(click item to view course description)Students will become familiarized with the main components of the crawler, specific uses of the machine, commonly used accessories, and the controls and their uses. Through hands on exercises the students will learn about specific operating safety procedures, the walk around check, start up and shut down procedures, and routine maintenance procedures. Through extensive seat-time on the machine students will perform basic work tasks and procedures with on going skill testing and operating tips. A proficiency list indicating skill level achievement will be developed for each student.

This course will provide a brief description of the HEO program, the program goals and objectives and delivery information. Students will discuss program expectations such as punctuality, attendance, safety gear, etc. Discussions about industry expectations will include mobility, attitude, importance of safety, professionalism, and environmental issues. HEO safety will be a large focus and includes personal safety, OH&S and job site safety. Basic earthmoving principles will be covered including surveying basics, the use of hand signals, and the basic characteristics of soils in heavy equipment operations.

Through extensive seat-time on the machine students will perform basic work tasks and procedures with on going skill testing and operating tips. Students will have the opportunity to achieve certification in CSTS, standard first aid, CPR C, and WHMIS. This course is optional depending on client expectations and previous safety certifications already held by the students.
