Online Learning

Overview

Online courses offer flexibility. Learn in your own community, do your work at home, access course materials anytime, and work on your own schedule at your own pace.

SIIT offers online programs provincially and nationally. The delivery platform used by SIIT is the MOODLE learning platform. Log onto the SIIT network and complete your studies from anywhere, at anytime.

SIIT will give you an orientation to help you feel comfortable with the online learning environment. In addition, you'll have access to the SIIT Help Desk if you have any technical concerns. Online courses are designed to be culturally pedagogical to meet a variety of learning styles.

Online courses are academic or applied and may be offered in combination with hands-on labs or workshops, depending on the course design. Some courses may also be supplemented with textbooks or reading packages.

While the design and delivery of an online program may vary from course to course, common features include:

  • an introductory online orientation course,
  • computer software that provides access to course material, including quizzes, readings, resources and assignments,
  • individual course progress and grade charts,
  • interactive forums for discussions, chats and communication with other online students,
  • communication with a qualified instructor or learning coach (by phone or online) to provide support and assistance,
  • access to online or telephone 'help desk' support, and
  • opportunities to submit assignments and questions online and receive feedback.
